During his 14 years representing our neighborhoods in Detroit, Buzz received awards and recognition from over two dozen community groups, publications, and organizations. He is one of the few Michigan legislators to have held leadership positions in both the Michigan House and Senate where he served as Demoractic Floor Leader before reaching his term limit in 2011.

Virgil Smith endorses Rick Bowers for Detroit City Council. Current State Senator and former State Representative from 2003 to 2013.
Virgil Smith, Jr. is a state senator representing northwest Detroit. He was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives for the three terms allowed under the current term limits law. Smith is the son of former Michigan Senator Virgil Smith. In 2010 he was elected to the Michigan Senate to fill the seat formerly held by Buzz Thomas, where he was named Assistant Whip by the Senate Democratic Caucus.
